With the royal family being in the public eye so much, royal experts have credited Princess Diana with the way pregnancy is displayed as it is no longer treated as much of a secret.

In the 2013 Netflix documentary The Royals, experts explained how Diana “wearing her bump with pride” changed everything for Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle.

Writer and journalist Anne de Courcy explained how royal pregnancies used to be “kept under wraps for a long time, especially before the second world war.”

She also added that the women were expected to stay at home while editor of Majesty magazine Ingrid Seward recalled not seeing a single image of the Queen mother during her pregnancy and only a handful of images of the Queen when she was with child.

“It was a private time, you weren’t photographed in the streets – people probably thought it was rude to photograph a member of the royal family when they were expecting a baby,” said Seward.

However, Diana continued to complete royal visits all while wearing outfits that showed off her baby bump.

Royal fashion historian James Sherwood explained that Diana was “probably the first royal mother that you saw,” and that her pregnancy excited the general public and “everything Diana did was front page news.”

The excitement for a royal baby has also been true with Kate’s three pregnancies and Meghan’s first.

During her pregnancies, Kate did not shy away from wearing tighter clothing to display her baby bump and appeared very proud and confident.

Meanwhile, Meghan has followed suit with her first pregnancy and has displayed her baby bump quite frequently in the past few months since the announcement was made that she and Prince Harry were expecting their first child.

Although there was a time in which royal pregnancies were more private, these days the public are eager to know as much as possible about the maternity fashion, birth plans and due dates.
