The Duke of Sussex reportedly once had a secret Facebook account that he used to contact loved ones under a pseudonym so that he wasn’t detected.
It is no secret that the royal family aren’t huge fans of social media. In fact, Meghan Markle notably deleted her Twitter, Instagram and blog, The Tig, before she became the Duchess of Sussex.
Royal author Katie Nicholl has revealed in her 2010 book William and Harry that Harry once used Facebook as a way to keep in touch with his loved ones during his deployment in Afghanistan in 2007.
The explains how Harry was allowed 30 minutes of time on a satellite phone like the others and that he used the social media site to also keep in touch with his girlfriend at the time, Chelsy Davy.
He was able to remain undetected by using the pseudonym “Spike Wells”. The name was chosen based on the fact that Spike was his nickname that even his protection officers referred to him as.
Ms Nicholls wrote in the book that Harry would send his girlfriend messages such as, “Lots of love to you, probably see you soon unfortunately for you, hehe! laters ginge!”
In another message he refers to Chelsy as “Chedda” and said that he was missing her. Nicholls added that it was the “thoughts of being reunited with Chelsy that kept Harry going.”
Unfortunately for Harry, he had to leave his post earlier than expected in February 2008 after his location in Afghanistan was leaked by Australian press.
Harry later deleted his secret Facebook account in 2012 following reports of him partying in Las Vegas.
