Meghan Markle and Ellen DeGeneres have been harbouring a secret friendship for two years now, with their close bond only becoming public knowledge after Ellen rushed to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s defence following the ‘private jet’ scandal.
Now, the origins of their unique friendship have been revealed and according to PEOPLE, it all started with a chance encounter.
Back in November 2017, Ellen was discussing Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s engagement on her show The Ellen DeGeneres show, when the comedian revealed she had run into the former Suits actress at an animal shelter.

The Duchess of Sussex later confirmed the remarkable story in Best Health, revealing she first met DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi, when they were adopting their first pet dog together.
Meghan explains how it was Ellen who convinced her to adopt her beloved pet dog, Bogart.
“Now, I don’t know her, but Ellen goes ‘Is that your dog?’ And I said, ‘No,’ and she’s like, ‘You have to take that dog.’ And I said, ‘Well, I’m deciding.’ And she’s like, ‘Rescue the dog!’” Meghan told the magazine.
“It’s sort of like if Oprah tells you to do something. I’m sitting there holding him and she’s like ‘Have you thought of a name for him yet?’ And I said, ‘Well, I think I’d name him Bogart,’ and she’s like ‘You’re taking the dog home.’”
Meghan continued, “And she walks outside to get into her car but instead of getting in she turns around and comes and taps on the window glass and she yells ‘Take the dog!’ And so I brought him home. Because Ellen told me to.”
It seems Meghan and Ellen have only grown closer over the years, with the Hollywood heavyweight revealing she has met baby Archie.
“I mean I can’t tell you how sweet they are,” Ellen gushed on her show this week, before revealing she was able to feed the little royal.
“But the most important thing is I got to hold Archie. I fed Archie. I knew how to hold him. He weighs 15 pounds which is the exchange rate of $17 here. Do you want to see a picture of him? I don’t have one, I didn’t think it was right to, but I did draw a picture of him and he looks like Harry. He has a body but I just did the face for y’all, he actually has a perfectly circular head. He looks just like Harry. And he had more hair than I did at the time.”
Ellen also revealed that the royals are “the cutest couple” and “so down to earth.”
“I just want to say it was an honour for them to meet me. Seriously, they are so amazing. They’re the cutest couple, so down to earth.”
