They’ve been fierce and vocal rivals on the show, snapping at each other more than once around the My Kitchen Rules table. But it seems that didn’t stop Jess and Emma from hitting up Queensland rival Steve with a very interesting love proposition.
The divorced archaeologist tells New Idea that the controversial Sydney sisters were very keen to set him up with their mum, convinced that they’d make an exciting new couple.
‘They decided they were going to try to set me up with their mother at the start,’ Steve tells New Idea. ‘They were calling me Dad for quite a while!’
The bizarre romantic proposition even had the tick of approval from Steve’s MKR partner and brother-in- law Stuss, who says he’d love to see romance blossom between the pair.
‘It would be really fun sitting around the table at Christmas with them!’ he says, laughing. But while there was a lot of support for the shock new romance, it seems Steve was sure to put the brakes on the relationship early on.
‘I wasn’t interested. I’ve been married twice and don’t want any more wives,’ he says. ‘I’m not looking, but never say no to love. I like to have a good time.’
While Stuss admits he was ‘disappointed’ when Steve’s romance with Jess and Emma’s mum didn’t develop, he does tell New Idea that Steve has a very colourful love life – with a ‘harem’ of young female admirers always by his side.
‘Steve will turn up to my house during the week witha beautiful, young blonde lady – and then will turn up to my place on the weekend with a different girl covered in tattoos from their neck down,’ Stuss reveals. ‘He’s very lovable.
‘The girls he brings around aren’t girlfriends, they’re just friends – but he has got a lot of them and they all live for his attention. If you put them all together it would be a harem, but if you put them all together there would be one less standing.’
Steve spills that he’s a prominent figure in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, known for its wild and diverse night-life – admitting that he’s a ‘bit of a character around there’.
‘I like to dress up, I wear lairy coats and bow ties,’ he tells New Idea. ‘I’m friends with lots of people in the Valley, dancers and entertainers, interesting people.
‘Most of my friends are women, that’s true – they are definitely the superior sex.’
While Steve may be playing down his exciting life, Stuss doesn’t hold back when describing his brother-in-law’s colourful world.
‘He is like a chameleon – he works by day as an archaeologist, but by night he turns into something like a vampire and his whole personality changes,’ Stuss explains.
‘Like during the day he is Dr Jekyll, he goes about his life in the tick-tock world, but at night he is Mr Hyde. He is some flamboyant character.
‘He will take you out to dinner at the Supper Club in the Valley, which is an exclusive eatery. Everyone cheers on Steve, even the owner knows who he is. Steve turns into such a colourful character.’
But while Steve has won over the affections of the people of Fortitude Valley, he and Stuss failed to impress Jess and Emma in the early days.
‘There was a generation gap. We were completely different,’ Emma tells New Idea.
‘And I thought Stuss was a little bit drunk around the table, so you never really knew the real him.’
Adds Jess: ‘We had our moments with Stuss and Steve, we were fine until we weren’t. They just didn’t get our humour. They took a lot of what Emma said quite personally.’
