Paramedic Pete Keach was attending a callout an hour from his home when he heard an emergency call out.
The details sounded familiar. A child the same age as his son Sam and in the same area as he lived.
Pete tried to call his wife Georgie but couldn’t get through so he radioed the triple-0 dispatcher.
The loving father then heard the words that chilled him to the bone.’Yes Pete, it’s your address.’
As another ambulance was dispatched, Pete finished his job and started driving home. All the while he listened to the events happening at his home as it became clear Sam had died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Pete says: ‘I got to hear the call, the initial situation report, so I knew what the rhythm of his heart was.’
As he arrived home, Pete knew Sam was dead.
Four years on Pete and his wife Georgie are supporting Red Nose Day today in memory of their son. They have gone on to have two daughters, Lucy, one, Anna, two.
