He was a happy seven-year-old with tummy pains but Sam Adams’s mum Brooke knew something must be wrong if her little boy was complaining.

She took him to hospital where she was told he ‘probably had gastro’.

But as the pain became worse doctors discovered he had a bowel condition common in children.

But days later when the pain returned, doctor ran further tests and discovered the little boy had an aggressive form of cancer.

The Burkitts non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma was in seven hot spots and Sam had to undergo immediate chemotherapy. Brooke quit her job as a teacher to be at Sam’s side while husband Dave and little sister Gemma are both missing having Sam at home.

Brooke recalls how she told her son he was sick: ‘We sat beside him and we said “mate there is something we need to tell you – you have a bad bug in your body”.’

She told Sam he’d have to stay in hospital until he was better. The little boy is taking his loss of hair in his stride. The family is hoping Sam makes a full recovery.
