She discovered a sinkhole her in her backyard yesterday, but all Lyn McKay is concerned about saving is her clothesline.
The sinkhole appeared in an Ipswitch backyard yesterday, leaving Lyn and Ray McKay temporarily homeless.
Ipswitch Mayor Paul Pisasale said: ‘If you take a look, the most important thing is we’ve anchored the clothesline to the house – all Lyn cares about is saving the clothesline,’ 9 News reports.
Experts claim the hole, which has grown to 12 metres in diameter, isn’t expected to grow any larger.
The sinkhole was caused by an old mine shaft.
‘It’s an exploratory shaft that was put in anywhere between 1903 and 1920,’ Pisasale said.
‘You can see this shaft was full up with rubbish and bottles and whoever did it (filled it), didn’t follow very good practices.
‘We will take all the steps to get Lyn and Ray back in their house. It’s the mines department’s responsibility.’
This is the second disaster to strike their property after they lost most of their possessions in the 2011 floods.
The couples daughter Tracey O’Neill told The Courier Mail: ‘I called Mum after seeing a big hole in their yard and she said “can’t talk we’re leaving the house”,’ O’Neill said.
‘I just thought not again. They had already lost everything in the floods and that was nearly the end of Mum and Dad emotionally and physically and then I saw this.’
