A former staff-member of Parramatta Girls’ School has been charged with raping and assaulting four of the students, and locking one of them in the school’s ‘dungeon’ and allegedly assaulting her while she was pregnant.
Noel Greenaway, 80, worked at the school as the relieving deputy headmaster from 1961 and 1967 where it is alleged he sexually abused the girls, report news.com.au.
Greenaway’s defense counsel, Simon Harben SC, told court that there were ‘significant issues’ with the claims made by the prosecution. He detailed the criminal histories and mental health of them women, as well as criticising their delay in raising the charges against their former teacher.
Magistrate Karen Stafford dismissed the claim that delay in coming forward was a valid ‘issue’ – since it was not uncommon for victims of abuse at the hands of authority figures to take time to come forward.
Greenaway’s boss at the school, Frank Valentine, 77, has also been charged. Both men’s names emerged as part of the child sex abuse royal commission.
Valentine and Greenaway will each will face court this year.
