A beautiful young woman has shared the terrifying story of how trying to pop a pimple on her face led to an infection that threatened to send her blind.
Sharing her experience on Twitter, Katie Wright says it all started when she felt a painful pimple ripening deep under her skin.
Doing what we would all probably do, she tried to lessen the pressure by giving the growing spot a little squeeze.
‘Within an hour my entire face swelled up and it HURT. It felt like something was going to burst out of my skin.’
Heading to the emergency room she was told by doctors that she had a nasty case of cellulitis – a bacterial infection deep in her skin similar to Staph.
‘Since it was on my face, there was a huge risk of it spreading to my brain or my eyes causing me to go blind,’ she explains.
She suspects that the infection came from bacteria that had gathered on her unwashed eyebrow tool.
‘I’m super strict on washing my face/beauty blender/brushes, but I never thought to disinfect my eyebrow spooly [sic].’
Thankfully Katie is on the mend, and astonished that her story has taken off. She joked on Twitter that she had gone ‘viral for being ugly.’
She’s now using her experience to warn others to properly clean their makeup tools.
‘It’s a small thing to do to avoid a painful, expensive, and traumatizing infection on your face.’
How to clean your makeup brushes and tools:
- Always clean and dry your make up brushes between use to prevent dangerous bacteria growing
- Immerse brushes and tools in warm water with a bit of gentle anti-bacterial soap and gently massage brushes to remove all residue
- Dry brushes with a lint-free towel, and then leave them to air dry completely before use
- Consider investing in a make-up sanitiser product. These products contain a high concentration of alcohol. Spray onto a fine cloth and then rub through the bristles of brushes and all over your tools to eliminate nasties, and speed up drying time.
