While many people STILL remember the days when the iconic McDonald’s soft serve ice-cream cost 30 cents, it seems things have changed quite a bit in recent years. In the 20 years since McDonald’s introduced the cut-price ice-cream, the standard price has doubled to 60 cents – which in the grand scheme of things, still makes it a very cheap treat.
But in a new scandal sweeping the country, it’s come to many Australians attention that different McDonald’s in different suburbs charge vastly different amounts for a soft serve.
In fact some customers are reporting that some McDonald’s are charging as much as 85 cents for a soft serve – that’s 25 cents or 42% more than other outlets, which are sticking to the recommended price of 60 cents.
‘There are two McDonald’s 2km from my house on the Gold Coast,’ wrote one fan on Reddit. ‘One of them charges 60 cents and the other charges 85 cents – both are in residential suburbs, both really busy. It makes no sense to me, and annoys me that there can be such a big price hike when they’re just a few kilometres apart.’Said another commenter: ‘I wonder if people even realise they’re paying more.’
