‘The curse of 2016’ has taken some of showbiz’s brightest and most talented stars.
We take a look at the celebrities who will be so dearly missed.
January
David Bowie
(8 January 1947 – 10 January 2016)
The curse of 2016 started off with David Bowie.
The iconic artist passed away from a private battle with cancer at the age of 69 – he had just recorded his 25th studio album.
Alan Rickman (21 February 1946 – 14 January 2016)
The Love Actually, Harry Potter and Die Hard actor died in hospital at the age of 69 after fighting cancer.
March
Jon English (26 March 1949 – 9 March 2016)
Aussie icon Jon English shot to fame in ‘70’s after staring in the musical production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
He won a Logie Award for best new talent in 1979 for his role in tv series Against The Wind and also won four Aria awards throughout his career.
Jon died at the age of 66 in March this year after suffering complications from an aortic aneurysm.
April
Prince (7 June 1958 – 21 April 2016)
The Purple Rain singer shocked the world when he died in his recording studios in Minneapolis at the age of 57.
June
Mohammad Ali ( 17 January 1942 – 3 June 2016)
Arguably the world’s most famous boxer, the legendary former heavyweight champion died aged 73 after a 35-year struggle with Parkinson’s disease.
Anton Yelchin (11 March 1989 – 19 June 2016)
The Russian-born Star Trek Beyond star died in a car crash earlier this year at just 27-years-old.
He was also known for his roles in Terminator: Salvation, alpha Dog and Fright Night.
August
Gene Wilder (11 June 1933 – 29 August 2016)
The iconic actor Gene Wilder died on 29 August after struggling with complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
While Gene had a long and successful career he is most famed for his role as Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
September
Alexis Arquette (28 July 1969 – 11 September 2016)
The transgender actress tragically died at just 47-years-old, with reports suggesting she passed away from complications related to AIDS.
Her brother confirmed she died listening to David Bowie’s Starman.
October
Pete Burns (5 August 1959 – 23 October 2016)
Arguably one of the 80’s leading icons, The Dead or Alive singer passed away aged 57 after suffering a ‘massive cardiac arrest’ this October.
Known for his acerbic wit and numerous plastic surgeries, Pete told Channel 5 in the UK he had “lost count” of the number of times he had gone under the knife.
‘The number of surgeries I’ve has is probably 300. I hope when I’m 80 and I get to heaven God doesn’t recognise me.’
November
Leonard Cohen (21 September 1934 – 7 November 2016)
One of the most influential songwriters of his generation, Leonard Cohen passed in November aged 82 after a long period of poor health.
Best known for his song Hallelujah, he was also a novelist and poet.
Florence Henderson ( 14 February 1934 – 24 November 2016)
She had a career spanning six decades, but Flo was best known for her role as Carol Brady in The Brady Bunch, the much-loved actress died from heart failure aged 82.
Andrew Sachs (7 April 1930 – 23 November 2016)
Andrew Sachs, the actor famous for his ‘Manuel’ role in the series Fawlty Towers, died in late November after a private battle with dementia. He was 86 years old.
December
Zsa Zsa Gabor (6 February 1917 – 18 December 2016)
Legendary Hungarian actress Zsa Zsa Gabor starred in films including Moulin Rouge, The Girl in the Kremlin and Queen of Outer Space after being named Miss Hungary in 1936.
She was famously married nine times – once saying: ‘Men have always liked me and I have always liked men’.
She suffered a heart attack aged 99 after years of ill health.
Rick Parfitt (12 October 1948 – 24 December 2016)
The Status Quo guitarist died from a heart attack on Christmas Eve aged 68.
‘He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, fellow band members, management, crew and his dedicated legion of fans from throughout the world, gained through 50 years of monumental success with Status Quo,’ a statement from the band’s management read.
George Michael (25 June 1963 – 25 December 2016)
The world is still reeling from the shock announcement of the Wham singer’s death aged just 53.
His publicist confirmed he ‘died peacefully’ at his home on Christmas day.
Alan Thicke (1 March 1947 -15 December 2016)
The sitcom star, best known for his starring role in Growing Pains, suffered a heart attack while playing hockey with his 19-year-old son Carter. He was rushed to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Los Angeles but did not survive.
