Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell’s cause of death has been revealed.
The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office has established that the 52-year-old died of suicide by hanging.
The musician – who shot to fame as the lead singer of band Soundgarden in the 1980s’ – was found dead in a bathroom at the MGM Grand in Detroit on Wednesday night, just hours after taking to the stage with his bandmates in a performance at the Fox Theatre, PEOPLE reports.

According to local news station WXYZ, the I Am The Highway hitmaker was found unresponsive by a by a family friend after Cornell’s wife asked him to check on his wellbeing.

A rep for the star has said in a statement that his family members were “shocked” to learn of his unexpected passing and thanked fans for “their continuous love and loyalty.”

A full autopsy report is yet to be completed.
Many have taken to Twitter to pay tribute to the star, including veteran musician Butch Walker, who credits Cornell as “one of the greatest voices in rock n roll history.”

Cornell is survived by his wife, Vicky Karayiannis, and three children.
