Throughout the story, the journalist noted that Renee had an odd expression when they discussed the fact that both Judy and her daughter, Liza Minnelli married gay men.

“It’s interesting that both Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli married gay men, I say, and here she makes the most complicated and hilarious face imaginable, one that seems to say, all at once, Haven’t we all? And Go Figure!” the reporter wrote, adding:

“‘Cute’s cute,’ she says. ‘Handsome is handsome! Sweet is sweet. If it works… I mean… I mean! Sometimes it just doesn’t really matter. It just didn’t. If there’s a spark, it just is, and who needs to explain it?’ (At the moment, she’s single, after a long relationship with a musician, her previous high-profile boyfriends include Bradley Cooper, Kenny Chesney, Jim Carrey, and George Clooney.'”

In the Vulture piece, Renee opened up about how she felt when she was asked about her “relationship to the gay community.”

“I just sound like a jerk, because I don’t think about it, which kind of sounds like, Oh you’re just indifferent to it. And it’s completely the opposite! I had a very hard time answering his question,” she told the journalist, adding:

“And then I thought, Well, what isn’t it? I’m not a wife of, I’m not a daughter of, and I’m not a sister of or a mother of’ any gay men.

“But I’m everything else! I’m the obvious: I’m an ex-girlfriend of, I’m a best friend of, I’m a mentor of, I’m a student of, I’m a client of, a partner of, I’m a neighbour, I’m a boss, a collaborator. I’m a patient. I’m a customer. I’m a constituent!”

The journalist also discussed growing up gay with the Oscar-winner, noting that there was “a lot of rage” and “a lot of stunted growth in the gay men” that he knows.

“My experience of it as an observer is the opposite from that. I see that they’re sort of an earlier maturation. And I see that there is that determination that you’re talking about, but it’s not without thoughtfulness. What I witness is a more evolved level of empathy – having been on the receiving end of such unexpected and damaging kindness.. See, I’m attracted to people who have had your experience,” Renee responded.

The Bridget Jones’s Baby actress married singer Kenny Chesney in May 2005 but shockingly split with him just four months later, citing fraud as the reason for their annulment.

The reason sparked rumours that Kenny was gay, which he famously denied.

Two years after their split, he told Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes: “I didn’t want to draw any more attention to it. I didn’t have to prove to anybody that I wasn’t [gay]. I didn’t feel like I really did.”

Renee also came out with a statement via The Hollywood Reporter that ‘fraud’ is “simply legal language and not a reflection of Kenny’s character.”
