A new parody advert featuring an iconic character from Aussie advertising – the ‘NOT HAPPY JAN!’ woman – has been dramatically pulled from TV screens over night, after legal action.

The advert, from chocolate maker Darrell Lea, was a cheeky, unofficial sequel to the famous, 19-year-old Yellow Pages ad, which saw a boss thundering at her employee, Jan, for forgetting to place an advert in the telephone directory.

The new advert shows the same boss averting her meltdown over the missing ad, by seeking solace in Darrell Lea chocolates, before uttering the line, ‘No worries, Jan’.

While some found the TV ad funny, Sensis, the parent company that owns Yellow Pages, was not happy – issuing an injunction to have the ad pulled off air.

Darrell Lea responded that it had ‘wanted to celebrate a classic Australian television ad’ and described the response to the ad as ‘extremely positive’.

‘In the spirit of Darrell Lea “Makes It Better”, we will be cancelling the ads and sending a big box of chocolate their way.’

Sensis responded that the advert was not an authorised use of their ‘beloved’ character, and created the incorrect impression that Yellow Pages had endorsed the campaign.
