Every celebrity from Kendall Jenner to Bella Hadid and Rhianna is currently getting their nipples pierced, but just when did this trend come about?
It is thought that nipple piercing began as early as the 14th century when women wore low necklines as their breast could be seen, and as such the ‘freely displayed nipples’ were often pierced with diamonds.
In the 1890s the bosom ring came into fashion and were sold in expensive Parisian jewellery shops. Called ‘Anneaux De Sein’ the rings were inserted through the nipple and linked with a chain.
Nipple piercings were also a practise of the Karankawa Indians from Texas and by the nomadic tribes of Kabyle in Algeria.
Today, nipple piercings are a favourite among many. The fashion has seen a resurgence in both men and women who find like the sexy appearance it gives them along with heightened sensitivity in the nipple area.
Which nipple should I pierce?
The trend is to pierce both nipples at the moment but prior to that women were usually piercing just one and no particular nipple.
Do nipple piercings hurt?
A lot of people say that nipple piercing is extremely painful but celebrity piercer Brian Thompson says the pain is only ‘short lived’ and ‘totally tolerable’. “It’s like one, two, done,” Brian says. “It’s short-lived pain.”

Nipple piercing aftercare
You need to keep the area as clean as possible to avoid infection. That means no touching the area, avoiding pools and spas, hot tubs and showers in countries with limited sanitation.
Nipple piercing healing time
It can take up to six months to fully heal, however some nipples never fully heal and may reject the piercing. If you see a red streak across the nipple you should get it fully checked and you may need to possibly remove the piercing.
Bleeding nipples
Bleeding is normal for the first week. The area will be very sore and you may get a crusty skin from them brushing against clothing.
Inverted nipple piercing
Some people with inverted nipples may be concerned that they won’t be able to get their nipples pierced but according to Brian, there’s no nipple you can’t pierce. “Your piercer can simply work the nipple out with their fingers,” he says.
Can you breastfeed with nipple piercings?
According to Brian, breastfeeding with nipple piercings is perfectly doable. But that does not mean it can’t cause complications or potentially scarring.
