Natalie Portman: Moby lied about dating me

The actress hits back at allegations

Natalie Portman has a very different recollection of her time with music star Moby than the version he described in his recent book. In fact, she says that far from ‘dating’ the star, she just remembers him as an older man, who ruined their friendship by being ‘creepy’.

The musician recently described their alleged dating life in his book Then It Fell Apart, claiming she initiated a fling that she ultimately ended.

‘I was surprised to hear that he characterised the very short time that I knew him as dating because my recollection is a much older man being creepy with me when I just had graduated high school,’ Natalie told Harper’s Bazaar UK online.

Natalie says she was 18 and just out of school when she met Moby, describing herself as a follower of his music. He in contrast says she was 20.

‘I was a fan and went to one of his shows when I had just graduated,’ she said. ‘When we met after the show, he said, “Let’s be friends.” He was on tour and I was working shooting a film, so we only hung out a handful of times before I realised that this was an older man who was interested in me in a way that felt inappropriate.’

The actress further attacked Moby and his publisher for not checking off the facts of the story before it was published. She says she was not approached at any time to see if the dating claims were true.

‘There was no fact checking from him or his publisher — it almost feels deliberate. That he used this story to sell his book was very disturbing to me. It wasn’t the case. There are many factual errors and inventions.’

Moby has so far declined to comment on Natalie’s version of events.

The performer’s book describes their first meeting as a flirtatious encounter, and claims he was taken aback by Natalie’s alleged attentions.

‘This was confusing,’ he writes, ‘I was a bald binge drinker who lived in an apartment that smelled like mildew and old bricks and Natalie Portman was a beautiful movie star. But here she was in my dressing room, flirting with me.’
