But it seems Molly Meldrum doesn’t care for the label.

“I just feel I don’t deserve that title,” The Logie Hall of Famer told Stellar.

“Being called an icon makes me cringe slightly. That’s something I never worked for.”

Instead, the 74-year-old credits his love of producing records and working in a team for his success in show biz.

“Words like ‘icon,’ ‘superstar’ and ‘legend’ are overused these days,” he explained.

But Molly insists there are other Aussie celebs deserving of the praise.

“People like Barry Humphries, Sir Donald Bradman, Muchael Hutchence, Kylie Minogue, Paul Hogan, Dawn Fraser, Shane Warne, Olivia Newton-John. These are all people I really admire for what they’ve achieved,” he added.

The news comes just days after it was announced that Countdown – the popular 1970’s variety show of which he was the host – would soon be returning to TV.

“We didn’t realise how big Countdown was becoming when we started making it,” he recalled.

“30 years after it finished, I’m still getting people stopping me almost every day to tell me how much they loved the show.
