Controversial new evidence of cheating on the part of the Ukraine could see Dami Im crowned the winner of the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest.
The Ukraine entrant, Jamala, won the competition with 1944, a controversial political song that almost saw the contestant disqualified before the competition took place for breaching Eurovision’s ban on “lyrics, speeches or gestures of a political or similar nature.”
New video evidence has emerged that the song was actually released and performed in public over three years ago.
Eurovision rules state entries must not have been commercially released before September 1 of the previous year. It is believed the Ukraine’s Eurovision reps have confirmed the authenticity of the video.
Eurovision organisers have defended their decision to allow Jamala to keep her title, saying “The video of a small concert had only been viewed by a few hundred people before it was discovered in the past few days. The EBU, based on previous decisions in the Reference Group, therefore has concluded that the published video did not give Jamala’s song any unfair advantage in the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest and the song was eligible to compete.”
