Following George Michael’s shock death on Christmas Day, tales of his incredible generoristy and philanthropic nature have come to light.
The Wham! star is said to have given huge sums of money to people he saw on TV or met in everyday life – Charities have also praised him for the thousands he helped raise during his life through concerts and donations.
In one case, George is said to have donated $25,000 to a woman who lost the money she so desperately wanted for IFV treatment during a TV game show.
British TV host Richard Osman tweeted: ‘A woman on Deal Or No Deal told us she needed £15k for IVF treatment. George Michael secretly phoned the next day and gave her the £15k.’
As well as donating fast sums of his estimated $170 million fortune to charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support, Dame Esther Rantzen, founder of UK charity Childline, also revealed that the ‘80s icon had given the royalties from his 1996 number one single Jesus To A Child to the charity.
A journalist also tweeted that she’s witnessed George hand over $8,500 to a barmaid after learning she was a student nurse who had large debts.
She also spoke about how George would often give free concerts to NHS staff.
Another person also came forward to reveal he often anonymously worked at homeless shelters.
In a statement to the press yesterday, George’s former manager Michael Lippman said that the star had died in bed as a result of suspected heart failure and there was ‘no foul play whatsoever’. Police are treating the death as ‘unexplained but not suspicious’.
