Police are searching for a missing man after a young woman’s body was found at Maroubra Beach this morning.
The woman, aged in her 20s, was discovered by a jogger around 6am this morning and has since been identified as international student from the University of New South Wales.
“She seemed young,” a woman who was present at the scene revealed on the Maroubra Community Facebook page.
“A guy going for a run started screaming for help so I grabbed a mobile and few of us bolted down.”
“There was nothing we could do though, she was gone… I feel so sad for her and her family. she was clothed so most probably wasn’t swimming especially as the beach was closed yesterday.”
Just hours later it was revealed that a man also in his early twenties, who was believed to be with the woman at the time, was reported as missing and a full scale search was issued.
However, the poor visibility and strong swell are proving difficult for rescuers.
“We haven’t been able to locate him at this stage,” Eastern Beaches inspector Anthony Agnew said.
“We’re doing our best but the surf is very hard.”
“There’s a strong possibility he has gone into the ocean as well.”
It is understood that police are investigating the incident as a potential drowning with woman’s death being treated as non-suspicious.
The woman’s friends have been notified, although her family from Nepal have not yet been reached.
