Radio hosts taken off air after early morning prank on boss

Did they go too far?

Triple J hosts Ben Harvey and Liam Stapleton were taken off air on Wednesday morning after playing an early morning prank on the station’s new head boss Lachlan Macara.

The 20-year-old and 23-year-old breakfast show duo called Macara just after 6am on their weekly segment named The Wednesday Morning Wake-up Call.

Macara was greeted by the catchy chorus of Bring Me To Life by Evanescene when he answered the call. Liam jumped in with a greeting of “Good morning” before informing his boss that he was live on air.

In response, Maracar said, “Fantastic, yep, this is great,” while still half-asleep.

Liam then asked, “Do we still have a job?”

To which Macara responded, “When I get in, we should chat.”

In an attempt to smooth things over with their boss, the hosts complimented his voice by saying he had a “sexy morning voice,” and Liam joked with him saying he sounded like “a bit of a slacker,” for not already being awake.

“You’re not awake yet but the rest of the people listening now are cogs in the machine… Do you have any words for these people?” continued Liam.

Before hanging up the call, Macara informed the boys, “Come see me in my office at nine.”

Ben and Liam later stepped out to speak to their boss on the phone while producer Belle took over. Belle informed listeners, “We’ve ha a little bit of a backlash there so we’re just dealing with that. So this is another song that I’m just going to play while we’re padding.”

Returning to the studio, Ben downplayed the issue by saying, “Everyone is cool here, not to worry,”

With Liam chiming in, “Some slackers can’t handle the heat when it comes to Wednesday morning wake up call.”

Liam also ensured listeners that the segment will continue on its weekly schedule.
