Rapid trips between major Australian cities like Sydney or Perth and the UK will be enabled by a new Virgin Orbit space port slated for construction in Cornwall, southern England, 7News.com.au reports.

Other ports could be stationed in the Scottish highlands, the British Telegraph says, built in collaboration with the UK Space Agency.

Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic has also been pegged as the “most likely candidate to take tourists beyond Earth’s atmosphere”, in what would be the dawning age of space tourism.

“For Britain to be the first spaceport in Europe to be able to offer that service because we have the legislation in place, because we’ve sorted out our infrastructure, that will be huge,” British Astronaut Tim Peake said.

Virgin Galactic launches will take off horizontally, unlike rockets, and will travel around the world.

If granted regulatory approval by Cornwall Council, the British port could be operational within the next five years.
