The Tasmanian Tiger was officially declared extinct in 1986 according to the Australian Museum…. however, decades following the extinction have been riddled with speculation.
WATCH: Rare Tasmanian Tiger sighting caught on camera
There have been at least eight sightings of the rare Tiger, which have all been reported to Tasmania’s Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment, just within the past three years.
The last recorded Tasmanian Tiger, known as a thylacine, died in captivity while in Hobart Zoo in 1936.
The rare mammal has the stripes of a Tiger on its lower half, with sandy-yellow fur, and a terrifying set of 46 teeth.
Locals and visitors across Tasmania do not believe that the animal is extinct after many have spotted the semi-nocturnal animal on several occasions.
Where have they been spotted?
A couple who visited Tasmania in January last year who is originally from Western Australia were very certain that they spotted a Tasmanian Tiger, after claiming it walked in front of their car near Corinna.
Walking across the road from one side to the other, the couple even claimed it stopped momentarily to look right at them. They say to have had it in their clear view for 12 to 15 seconds, according to documents from Tasmania’s Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment.
They described the animal as stiff with a firm tail, with stripes down its back.
One month later and a witness who lives in a rural area said he saw a “large cat-like creature” while on a group bike ride.
“The whole picture didn’t really make sense to me as far as identifying the animal as any animal I know,” they explained.
“I am accustomed to coming across most animals working on rural farms and I have never come across an animal anything close to what I saw in Tasmania that day.”
Again, a woman claimed in July 2018 that she saw a Tasmanian Tiger with its two cubs at Hartz Mountain.
This year, a man is convinced he saw a Tasmanian tiger footprint during a walk up Sleeping Beauty Mountain.
In August, a different man reported that he witnessed a Tasmanian Tiger at his farm seven years ago.
Two separate sightings were reported in 2017 and 2016 which claimed that the tigers came very close to moving cars.
