A Brisbane grandmother is set to appear in court today charged with attempted murder of her infant grandson after allegedly slashing his face with a meat cleaver.
The mother, who lives in Sydney and who was visiting the home in Brisbane with her son, was woken just after 6am yesterday by the sound of her child screaming.
The young boy was found with serious facial injuries with his 64-year-old grandmother nearby, and a large knife was reportedly found at the scene.
The child was taken in a critical condition to Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, where he underwent surgery.
A spokesman for the hospital told Nine he was in a serious but stable condition.
Detectives charged the grandmother with attempted murder and serious assault yesterday, with police saying the boy’s mother was ‘distraught.’
Inspector Daniel Bragg told reporters, ‘The mother found the child in a distressed state with injuries to his face. She’s clearly distraught over what’s occurred. She’s provided police with all the assistance she could.’
Insp. Bragg said paramedics who were called to the home, as well as the first police officer on the scene, were visibly distressed by the scene.
‘It was distressing to see such injuries to such a small child,’ Insp. Bragg said. ‘This is the worst case scenario. I’m led to believe that the ambulance officers who attended were visibly distressed by what they were dealing with.’
Doctors are expecting the boy to make a full recovery.
