WHAT IS BASTILLE DAY AND WHY IS IT CELEBRATED?
Bastille Day is a national holiday in France that marks the anniversary of the fall of the Bastille in Paris. On July 14, 1979, the Bastille was stormed in a violent uprising that helped usher the French Revolution. Originally built as a medieval fortress, the Bastille was eventually turned into a state prison.
Bastille Day is celebrated in Australia to bring together the French-Australian community.
