George And Amal’s Love Story
Amal met George in Lake Como, Northern Italy, in July 2013. The Oxford and New York University law school graduate was introduced to the actor by a common friend. The two had a bit of a whirlwind romance resulting in Amal and George Clooney’s wedding a little over a year later in September 2014.
George shared that the two fell in love over emails, phone calls, and dates. “I thought she was beautiful, and I thought she was funny and obviously smart. [But as we continued our conversations with each other], it became clear we were more than just friends”, he told The Hollywood Reporter.
After only nine months of knowing each other and only six months of dating (when you know, you know), George popped the question. But this time, the answer didn’t come as quickly as the courtship! He had to wait 20 minutes on his knee before Amal finally said yes!
The two officially tied the knot in Venice, Italy, with 90 of their closest friends and family at the event. On their wedding day, George looked rather dashing (as he always does) in his Giorgio Armani tuxedo, but it was Amal Alamuddin’s dress that stole the show.
The Dress
Being the classy woman that she is, Amal Clooney’s wedding dress was layers upon layers of ivory French Chantilly lace and tulle. Pearls and diamante stones were embroidered on the gorgeous gown, making the dress a work of art down to the smallest details.
The bride completed the look with an off-shoulder design and a cathedral-length veil with bead-and-crystal embroidery which extended all the way down past her train. As Amal walked down the aisle with a bouquet of white flowers, she was radiant in a simple yet elegant ensemble.
The Designer
The mastermind behind this beautiful dress is world-renowned designer Oscar de la Renta. Because de la Renta is most famous for his bridal dresses, Amal was sure that she wanted a custom-made gown. “George and I wanted a wedding that was romantic and elegant, and I can’t imagine anyone more able than Oscar to capture this mood in a dress”, Amal said in an interview with Vogue.
During her final fitting in Bryant Park, New York, it was a full house for Oscar de la Renta; Amal’s mother, Baria, sister, Tala, and niece and only flower girl, Mia, were all there to see the finished product. The pressure was on for the designer, but the moment Amal put on that dress, everyone realised that it was perfect.
The Cost
We can’t say exactly how much Amal’s wedding dress costs, but we can surmise it’s close to another dress she famously wore: The yellow dress designed by Stella McCartney that she wore during Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Royal Wedding back in 2018.
On Matches Fashion, the dress that is now rightfully dubbed as the “Amal tie-back crepe dress” sells for $AUD1,995!
The Reception
The public’s reaction to Amal’s wedding dress has been nothing but positive, with websites like Elle, Hollywood Life, and Virgin Media Television talking about how beautiful the dress was and how talented Oscar de la Renta is to produce a gown of that calibre.
How To Get (Close To) The Look
Since this is a custom-made Oscar de la Renta gown, it would be impossible to get the same dress. But you can get something quite close if you book the right designer. Here are five wedding designers who can make you look just as gorgeous:
Justin Alexander
Similar to what Oscar de la Renta does, Justin Alexander also makes use of a lot of lace and tulle. He also makes wedding dresses with pockets – an essential nowadays! He labels his Spring/Summer 2020 collection as “Timeless Elegance”, with “classic elegance with a hint of modern chic styling” as its tagline.
Romona Keveza
Romona Keveza is a designer who brings something new to the table. By experimenting with colours and textures (metallic silver, black lace, etc), future brides are in for a treat when they see how original these dresses are.
Reem Acra
Reem Acra also works with lace and tulle, but a big difference is the use of shiny materials. Gold and silver lace, studs, and sequins are used for her ready-to-wear bridal gowns.
David’s Bridal
David’s Bridal is big on lace, as seen on his website. He experiments with different necklines and dress designs that keep his gowns fresh and unique every time. His design range from Disney princess to fancy dinner party. He also produces high fashion dresses and pantsuits.
Isabel Armstrong
Isabel Armstrong fuses art and fashion together in her designs, and there is no such thing as “too much” with her. With so much detail added to all her designed dresses, it genuinely looks like they were not made with human hands and fingers.
Conclusion
“It’s [the wedding dress that is] the most important dress in the life of a woman. Any girl from any walk of life dreams of that special dress, and I try to make that dream a reality for her,” designer Oscar de la Renta tells Vogue.
And for Amal Alamuddin-Clooney, a dream-turned-reality it was.
