After a tumultuous start to their reign, King Frederik and Queen Mary have quietly orchestrated the perfect romantic reset with their “second honeymoon”.
When Mary and Frederik’s summer stay at Grasten Palace with their four children came around, it was much needed for the couple, and an insider exclusively tells New Idea that they used it as a “time to reconnect” following their busy tour of Australia.
“The last couple of years have been transitional and traumatic, but this break from duties was the summer they fell in love all over again,” the source reveals.

“Frederik is finally settling into his new role as King, and his confidence has helped him reconnect with Mary.”
The source added that they have “agreed to prioritise their marriage as they restart work” and made a pact for the future.
“They have a romantic yacht trip to Belgium planned for September after agreeing to reconnect with a quick weekend away at least once a month,” the insider continues.
In the past few months, the Danish royal family also had to grapple with Queen Margrethe’s sudden dash to the hospital, where she underwent angioplasty surgery for blocked arteries.
With concerns about Margrethe’s health and eventual passing, another royal insider told New Idea that the implications for the Australian-born Queen in particular are staggering.
“This is when Mary truly becomes Denmark’s matriarch,” the insider says.

“She won’t just be viewed as Frederik’s wife anymore. She becomes the senior royal woman in the country overnight. That carries enormous emotional weight.”
It also a major shift for the royal couple, who have been in power since January 2024, when Margrethe abdicated the throne.
“The country has already had two years to adjust to Frederik and Mary leading the monarchy. But once Margrethe is gone, there’s no longer a safety net, emotionally, or symbolically. Suddenly, it all rests on them,” the source continues.
