Dramatic times for royal fans, with a major royal wedding canned amid unprecedented media attention in Japan.
Princess Mako, 26, the eldest daughter of Japan’s Prince Akishino and granddaughter of Emperor Akihito, has pulled the plug on her wedding to Kei Komuro — a non-royal whom she met in college. The drama officially constitutes a postponement, but gossip is the wedding may possibly be off for good.
“It is because of our immaturity and we just regret it,” the couple said in a statement, reports CNN. “I wish to think about marriage more deeply and concretely and give sufficient time to prepare our marriage and for after the marriage.”
The couple’s romance has sparked controversy, as the princess will be required to renounce her royal status if they tie the knot.
The wedding is now off until “at least 2020”, and will follow Emperor Akihito’s abdication in April 2019.
“We feel extremely sorry for causing great trouble and further burden to those who have willingly supported us,” Mako said in the statement.
Princess Mako’s uncle Crown Prince Naruhito is expected to succeed Emperor Akihito.
