We’ve been toning our hair since Ancient Greek times, when people would rub lemon juice or camomile into their hair and lie out in the sun to achieve a lighter shade. Whether it’s due to a change in weather, a major life event or just to treat ourselves, humans love changing their hair colour.
With stars like Jennifer Lawrence making the silver grey look increasingly popular, more people than ever before have been rocking up to their hairdressers with dreams of going a several shades lighter. But what do you do to maintain your new colour once your stylist has worked their magic? You don’t want to have spent that 5-6 hours in the salon chair for nothing.
The answer is toning. Toning is how you’ll maintain your new colour in between appointments. It’s not as complex as it sounds, and we’ve even picked out 10 of the best toners for your hair!

What does toner do to your hair?
The bleaching part of the process isn’t where you get your colour – it’s the toner that gives you that shade you’ve been lusting after. Toner is the most important part of the colouring process, as it works to both adjust or maintain the warm or cool tones in your curly locks. Toners can also add shine to your hair and reduce the appearance of split ends.
Toner itself comes in many different forms. You can’t just walk into the supermarket or the hairdressers and ask for a standard toner, there are just too many to choose from. Tinted shampoos, demi-permanent colours, foams and glosses can all be considered toners, because they work to adjust the tone in your hair.
Purple and blue toners, like the purple shampoos and conditioners you can get from most stores, are all about eliminating brassiness. Blue toners work best for brunettes and red-heads, because the blue cancels out any sneaky orange tones. Purple toners work best for blondes, keeping your highlights looking salon fresh by reducing yellow hues.
How long does toner last?
It will depend on your hair type. Toner typically lasts anywhere between two to six weeks, and this is way you’ll notice your colour fading. If your hair has been previously coloured, it will hold your new colour for less time than un-dyed ‘virgin’ hair. This is because dyed hair is more porous than virgin hair, which can hold colour for up to six weeks.
Does toner damage hair?
Not if you have it done professionally, but you can end up with over toned hair if you get a bit too enthusiastic at home. Stick to the directions, and if you don’t feel confident make an appointment with your colourist instead. It’s their job after all!

This range is about subtle lightening and you can see from the hair toner before and after picture (above) that the change is not a dramatic one.
Reviews: Here’s a 5 star review from Chemist Warehouse
‘Works!
I’ve been using all four ‘Go Blonder’ products together (shampoo, conditioner, in-shower treatment and spay). I began 3 weeks ago & I use each product exactly as per packet instructions. My hair is still soft, very healthy and MUCH lighter. I was born blonde, but my hair colour deepened to a rich brown through adolescence. In 3 weeks I’ve gone from a perfect match with JF’s “Dark Chocolate Brown” hair dye, to what I’d call a “caramel blonde”. Looking forward to continuing to lighten over the next weeks! Note: I wash my hair about 6 days a week, then follow with the spray & a quick, but hot, blow dry. I have no straighteners or hot irons. Others who only wash hair once or twice a week would be slower, while peeps with straighteners or hot irons would likely be faster to lighten.”

“Been using this for YEARS!! I mix it with my regular shampoo to get a little bit every wash. I have platinum blonde hair and the colour needs some serious management. It’s long and using curling irons, the sun and time in general turns it the last 8 inches yellowy. For a real treatment just wash your hair in the shampoo as it is – it may leave a blue/purple residue but that will last for 1 wash.”
