There’s nothing more Aussie than a good old-fashioned Vanilla Slice – or ‘Snot Blocks’ as they’ve been called Down Under over the years. We’ve all eaten a million over our lifetimes. Whether it be at your local bakery growing up or even more fancy versions growing up, like the ‘Mega Vanilla Slice’ from Mount Martha’s MPH Cafe in Victoria, that sells 15cm variations of the classic (pictured above). Woah!
But as variations of the iconic Aussie dessert work their way around the world, we’ve noticed that many people simply can’t work out how to eat them.
UK eatery St John Restaurant recently posted a pic of their take on the classic on their Instagram account, resulting in an onslaught of comments from Brits desperate to eat it. But what we couldn’t believe was how many couldn’t quite work out how to eat it.
‘I bloody love these things but how on Earth are you actually supposed to eat them?!’ said one follower. Added another: ‘Yaaas! But how to eat them without the custard splurting all over the place?’Added a third: ‘Can someone do a YouTube video on how to eat these?’And it’s not just Brits – while researching other Vanilla Slice posts around Instagram, we noticed that many foreigners simply couldn’t work out how to tackle the delicious dessert.‘I’ve spent 10 minutes looking at this trying to work out how to eat it,’ wrote one American user. Added another European user: ‘This looks delicious. But how exactly do you eat it?’
