Patti Newton shares heartbreaking tribute to late husband Bert

News of Bert Newton’s death rocked the country, but none more so than his widow Patti Newton who continues to mourn and remember the great love of her life.

On what would have been his 86th birthday, Patti took to her social media to share an emotional message, celebrating and remembering her late husband of 47 years.

“To my darling Bert, Happy Birthday, hope you’re having a great time, you have so many wonderful friends up there with you,” the 79-year-old singer, actress, and dancer penned.

“We all miss you every single day. Love you Mack xxx,” the message concluded with a touching node to the nickname Bert used to call her.

In an additional photo of the couple shared by Patti of her and the quadruple Logie winner wrapped in each other’s arms, she simply wrote “Goodnight my darling, sweet dreams xx.”

The update comes after Patti shared with the Sydney Morning Herald that she would “never stop thinking” about her late husband: “[He] will always be the love of my life,” she shared with the publication at the time.

On November 9th, 2023, Patti marked what would have been her 48th wedding anniversary with Bert with a sweet tribute on her social media, writing: “Happy anniversary, [the] best day of my life. Miss you ❤️❤️.”

Just weeks earlier, the widow reflected upon two years since her beloved Bert left her side, taking to her Instagram to share a heartwarming family photo of Bert surrounded by his grandchildren.

“This day two years ago we said goodbye to this wonderful man, the love of my life. We miss you every moment of every day. Sleep well we love you ❤️,” Patti penned emotionally. 

Just three months prior, the widow celebrated what would have been her late husband’s 85th birthday, reflecting upon the many happy memories she shared with her husband before his death. 

“Miss you every day my beautiful man. Happy Birthday always in our hearts ❤️ love you x,” she penned.

The posts are two of many Patti has made to her beloved husband.

During Easter 2023, she shared a photo of Bert with one of their grandchildren, with bunny filters over their faces. 

“Thinking of my darling Bert at this special time. Happy Easter to you all 😍❤️.”

Then in November 2022, Patti posted a throwback snap of her wedding day to Bert almost 50 years ago, the lovebirds all smiles as they gazed deep into each other’s eyes. 

“1974 9th November was the best day [of] my life. I married this wonderful man. I’m so lucky to have had him choose me. Miss him and love him every day 😍.”

Then in September of the same year, Patti shared a snap of her granddaughter smiling alongside her “poppy.”

“We will never stop loving and missing you Poppy xx.”

Marking what would have been Bert’s 84th birthday in July 2022, Patti posted a photo of Bert with what looks to be a chocolate cake, posing with a huge smile alongside his grandkids. 

“We always made Bert’s birthdays special,” captioned the sweet image at the time. 

“We’re thinking of all the wonderful birthday memories we have, and hope he knows just how much he’s missed and loved by us all 😀.”

On January 18th, 2022, Patti took to Instagram the first of what would be many tributes to the Aussie icon. 

The performer posted an old photo of Bert from his hospital bed, who was looking in high spirits at the time the snap was taken.

The image, which she uploaded without an accompanying caption, received an outpouring of love and support from Patti’s followers.

“We are always thinking of you, Patti! 💕,” one fan wrote.

“Beloved forever ❤️,” another added.

“Our ever smiling Bert ❤️,” a third penned.

Bert’s death was announced on 30th October 2021. The 83-year-old had been battling health complications for a while.

In November 2020, it was Patti that revealed her husband had been admitted to hospital.

The following year, in May, Bert had to have his leg amputated due to an uncontrollable infection in his toe.

“It got worse … he was seeing doctors and specialists and they couldn’t seem to get it right, it kept on spreading,” Bert’s longtime friend and entertainment reporter Peter Ford told The Morning Rush with Sean and Kate.

“Basically he was told last week, that you have a couple of months to live, or if you have your leg amputated, you’ll probably have a few years. So, he agreed to have the leg amputated on Saturday.”

Patti remained by Bert’s side for nearly 50 years of marriage. The fellow performer mourned her husband’s death soon before the couple was due to celebrate their 47th wedding anniversary on November 9th the year of his passing.

Crestfallen at losing her soulmate, Patti addressed the public about the emotional turmoil she and her family have experienced since Bert’s death.

“It’s very, very devastating. All our hearts are breaking because he was just the most wonderful man,” she told reporters outside of the family home the day after his passing.

“He had such a fabulous attitude. And he gave us so much joy right up to the end.”

The performer also spoke about her final moments with her husband, explaining that she tragically missed his last breath.

“I left at ten past seven, and I was just pulling around to come into my drive and I get the call to say he’d taken his last breath at 7.22pm.

“So I missed him, but maybe he didn’t want me to be there for his last breath.

“We have to just make sure that the love he gave us stays with us forever.”
