The X-Factor second runner up has been a firm favourite since he burst onto the music scene in 2011.

He then took a break to star as Chris Harrington on Aussie soap, Home and Away.

But he’s now back doing what he loves best, going back to his roots to release a new single, ‘Broken Glass’.

Speaking on The Morning Show, Johnny said: “I’m so excited to be back writing music, and just back on the music scene.”

“This is probably the most vulnerable song I’ve written, it’s very personal for me,” he said.

Johnny went on to explain the song is loosely based on own experiences over the past two to three years.

“It’s a song about being down and out. Not necessarily what I went through with cancer, it might be depression, it might be losing a loved one.

“When you’re down and out, sometimes you need a helping hand,” he shared.

“Everybody, no matter who you are, goes through struggles.”

The 31-year-old star, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2017, told hosts Kylie Gillies and Larry Emdur of how he handled the challenges that life threw at him.

Speaking of how he pulled through, he said a support group was invaluable.

“Friends, family, my partner Tahnee [Sims], and some really close friends of mine helped me,” he revealed.

Johnny has his girlfriend to thank for saving his life.

He discovered he had a tumour in his brain after his partner Tahnee rushed him to the hospital when he complained of a severe headache.

“I was just at home and I had a headache, but everyone has headaches and you never think much of it,” he tells Who Are You podcast host Pete Timbs.

“It had been ongoing and it just got worse and worse. It got to about 4 or 5 in the afternoon and I couldn’t speak, I couldn’t communicate with her [Tahnee] at all.”

That’s when Tahnee decided she had to take Johnny to the hospital. At first he was told it was just a migraine, but was told to stay overnight for testing.

The next morning doctors phoned Tahnee and revealed that her boyfriend had fallen into a coma, had a brain tumour and would have to undergo emergency surgery to remove it.

Johnny’s single Broken Glass is out now, and as he told the hosts he has been writing more music, fans can expect an album or an EP very soon.
