Married At First Sight alum Zoe Hendrix has spoken candidly on co-parenting with former partner Alex Garner.
The 29-year-old former reality star, who announced she had split with TV husband Garner in April, revealed on Monday’s episode of the Single Mother Survival Guide podcast how she has coped in the past six months.
Hendrix admitted that she felt “embarrassed” and “overwhelmed.” “I felt a massive amount of shame and failure,” she told host Julia Hasche. “I was thinking I had let people down. I had failed in the fairytale that a lot of people were invested in.”
Hendrix and Garner share a one-year-old daughter, Harper-Rose, and have been navigating the world of co-parenting.
Hendrix called it a “cruel and unusual punishment” for recently separated parents.
She added, “This is not healthy. This system, when you break up with someone, you’re meant to go your separate ways. You’re meant to be out of each other’s lives. It’s really a cruel system to have to see that person so regularly. It’s not right, but it has to happen.”
Hendrix explained that she has “90 percent” care of Harper-Rose.
“[Garner] has her one night a week and then usually for a couple of hours another day in the afternoon,” she said.
Hendrix also explained that she and Garner have one rule when it comes to co-parenting.
“No changes can be made to the parenting plan without at least two weeks notice,” she explained. “So you can’t just be like ‘Oh, I can’t have her on this day [without much notice].'”
Hendrix and Garner met on Season 1 of MAFS in 2015, and continued their relationship outside of the eight-week experiment. They welcomed Harper-Rose in November 2016.
