2015 Australian Of The Year Rosie Batty has joined high-profile campaigners, politicians and charity groups supporting our We Care campaign, which promises to deliver a care pack a day to women bravely fleeing family violence.
Rosie, who has campaigned tirelessly against family violence since her son Luke was murdered by his father last year, endorsed our pledge, saying Australians need to take a united stand.
‘Every effort counts. If we are going to address the family violence epidemic we need to do it together,’ she says. ‘We need to stand beside every victim of family violence. We need to support them in the community and give them a voice.’
Rosie joins Pru Goward, NSW Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence And Sexual Assault, and Michaelia Cash, Minister For Women, to support New Idea’s pledge to distribute 365 We Care Packs.
Launched with Anglicare Australia, the We Care Packs will be delivered to women using crisis accommodation, emergency relief and women’s shelters.
It’s our way of supporting these women and letting them know that they’re not alone – that there’s a whole community out there willing to help them start over.
Kasy Chambers, executive director at Anglicare Australia, says the packs will make a huge difference to hundreds of women from all walks of life.
‘Our partnership with New Idea is about awareness, and not underestimating the power of a little help,’ she says.
‘The packs contain everyday items we take for granted and this small gesture may give women back a sense of self-worth, and also means one less thing to worry about.’
New Idea is raising funds for victims of domestic violence to provide them with We Care Packs. We aim to help one woman a day in 2016 – but we need your help to do that.
