  1. Plan it out – I like to get in and get out and not mess around when it comes to the weekly grocery shop. So I like to make a grocery list specifically for school lunch ingredients. If I plan and write up a list, it stops me from getting distracted or overwhelmed by options or things I don’t really need. I find this always results in a cheaper receipt at the end as well!
  2. Make time for lunch packing – Allow time to pack, whether it’s the night before or the morning of each school day. I find prepping the night before then packing it all in the morning is a great routine for me.

3. Be a nutrition role model – My kids watch what I eat and drink and this is a huge influence. So show your kids that good nutrition matters by putting healthy, balanced meals and snacks into action every day at home. Eating and drinking the same thing as them is a good trick! H2coco’s Lunchbox Range for example offers healthy, affordable drinks and flavours for both kids and adults.

4. Teach as you shop – Kids are never too young to start learning how to make healthy decisions. Have your kids find a new vegetable or fruit from the produce department to try, or send them on a mission to find yellow vegetables. Explain why some foods are healthier than others. Education is a powerful tool when it comes to what we choose to feed our bodies with. I want to empower my boys to look after their bodies.

5. Cook off  Spare a couple of hours over a weekend, where you can cook up some healthy treats in bulk and then freeze them to include in your kids’ lunchbox throughout the week. The best way to be cost effective is to make snacks from scratch. You can make muffins, muesli bars, super-food balls and freeze them! Whilst this is unrealistic to do every weekend, doing it every fortnight or even once a month will be a fun activity to put on your calendar to enjoy with the kids.
The Lunchbox range is available now in Woolworths and Coles nationwide.
