WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been sentenced to 50 weeks in prison for breaking his bail in 2012, 7News reports.
On Wednesday Judge Deborah Taylor said that Assange should be given the maximum sentence due to the seriousness of the offence.
Assange asked for leniency based on his seven-year stint in the Ecuadorian Embassy, but it was denied by Judge Taylor.
Last month Assange was dragged from his safe haven and charged by the United States for leaking highly classified information.
Protesters have rallied around Assange, with his supporters chanting ‘shame on you’ at Judge Taylor as the WikiLeaks founder was lead away.
Last month Assange was convicted of skipping his bail in 2012 to seek asylum at Ecuador’s London embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over rape and sexual assault allegations.
This is a developing story, more to come.
