The crimes of Manson and his followers shocked the world.
This year marks the 50th anniversary since Manson and several of his followers went on a killing spree in Los Angeles, killing nine people from July to August of 1969 including pregnant actress Sharon Tate.
Manson was imprisoned for his crimes and died behind bars in 2017 aged 83, while the three women killers and ‘Manson Family’ members charged for the brutal slayings still hope to be released from prison.
Many people are conflicted over whether Leslie Van Houten, Susan Atkins, and Patricia Krenwinkel, the women repsonsible for some of the murders, deserve to be released from prison.
Catherine Share, a former lover of Charles Manson and a one-time devoted follower, is one of many who believe the surviving murderers should be granted their freedom.
Speaking with 60 Minutes reporter Tara Brown, Share described the vulnerable state of most women who entered the cult, and how Manson was a God-like figure: “I thought he was the closest thing to Jesus.
“He just seemed like he knew everything. So we listened to everything he said like it was gospel.”
In the interview, Catherine who joined the cult when she was 25 years old, insisted she was never asked to take part in the crimes, but reveals to refuse Manson was to face the threat of death: “I probably would have died first. If I had said ‘no’, I might have been killed.”
At the moment the surviving ‘Manson Family Killers’ all remain incarcerated, although Leslie Van Houten, now 69, could become the first member of the cult family to walk free in a matter of weeks after her bid for parole was recently granted.
“They’re just not the same people they were when they were 20 and 18 at all. ‘It’s time,” Ms Share said.
Van Houten was involved in the stabbing murder of supermarket executive Leno LaBianca and his wife Rosemary when she was just 19 and has applied for parole 20 times.
Of the murders, Van Houten has said: “I don’t let myself off the hook. I don’t find parts in any of this that makes me feel the slightest bit good about myself.”
While Share believes the women should be released from prison, the former Manson Family Member does not feel the same way about its infamous leader, telling the program: “There are just some people who are unsafe to be out.”
