The Australian world No. 1 was taken down by the world No. 55 in a three-set loss that shocked fans.
Ash Barty was looking confident in the first few rounds of the Grand Slam, but the 23-year-old quickly became frazzled as the American took advantage of Barty’s unusually soft serve.
Last night marked the first time Barty was sent to a three-setter since the French Open semi-finals in June.
In the post-match press conference, Barty remained a class act admitting it was her serve that ultimately cost her the match.
“Tough one. I think I started well. I was sticking to how I wanted to play,” Barty began.
“Then in the second set, I think my serve let me down. I let Alison get back into the match too many times, having looked at second serves.
“Overall I didn’t play a poor match. When I needed to, when the big moments were there, Alison played better today. Tough one to swallow but I lost to a better player.”
