The Block‘s Courtney and Sev found themselves playing peacemakers behind the scenes with Chantel and Wyatt this week.
The Blue Team threatened to quit after they were falsely accused of going $10,000 over the proposed budget, with Courtney and Sev stepping in to help de-escalate things.
“They sort of came to us for support – well, I think it was more to vent, not for support – but we were sort of there to hear them out,” Sev exclusively tells New Idea.
“They had a really strong response to that, and I think if that sort of situation happened to Courtney and I, I don’t know if we would have been as reactive as what it was.”
As viewers saw, Wyatt was particularly shaken by the mix-up, sparking his threat to quit the Channel Nine series altogether.
“We just kept on encouraging him to hold fire and just to find out if there was a mistake that happened in the backend, given the time that it needed [for] The Block producers [to] get their ducks in a row and come back to you,” she explains.
“You’ve obviously got some proof of your bank spending and all of that. So it was not up to Courtney and I, but we felt like we just had to cool them down a little bit.”
The budget blunder came on the heels of Week One’s controversial painting saga, where Chantel and Wyatt were caught outsourcing their painting, with questions swirling about how much their tradie had done.
“I guess that [the budget] was unfair,” Courtney admits.
“I haven’t seen anything else that is unfair towards them. We haven’t seen the painting saga unfold, Sev and I still don’t really know the full story, do we?”
“Was it five minutes? Was it five hours? We don’t have the facts on that.”
“So, I think they had it pretty rough when they were exposed to overspending a great deal when it turned out they didn’t.”
Though Chantel and Wyatt ultimately decided to stay in the competition, New Idea understands that Scott Cam was less than impressed over his clash with the duo.
“Scotty has seen human error happen on building sites for decades,” a production insider told us.
“Nobody was pretending it wasn’t a serious error. But he felt most contestants would have handled it very differently.”
“From his perspective, the reaction didn’t seem to match the mistake itself. That’s when he became suspicious there was more going on beneath the surface.”
While Scott wasn’t the one to make the error, he found himself at the centre of Chantel and Wyatt’s fury.
“He wasn’t the one working out the measurements. He wasn’t the one doing the calculations,” the insider explains.
“He’s the face of the show, so he had to deliver the message exactly as production instructed. He was essentially following the script he was given.”
It remains to be seen how the tense clash will affect the rest of the competition.
