What Is the Difference Between Macaron and Macaroon?

They’re both delicious but they’re very different

They have almost exactly the same ingredients, are both classified as biscuits, have European origins and are two of the most popular delicacies. But what really is the difference between a macaroon and a macaron?

Well, a macaron originated in France and consists of two light meringue biscuits sandwiched together with a sweet ganache. A macaroon, on the other hand, consists of a shredded coconut and egg mixture which is baked into a soft and fragrant cookie (or mound).

Macaron

Macarons are probably one of the most famous and most Instagrammed desserts, they are perfectly piped into identical disks and come in a variety of flavours. Some of the most common flavours include raspberry, rose, pistachio and lavender. The biscuit boasts a crunchy exterior with a lightweight interior, but where it gets confusing is that in France (where they originated) they are known as a French macaroon.

Macaroon

A macaroon on the other hand, refers to a dense coconut-y biscuit. Macaroon recipes generally consist of nuts, and egg whites and coconut of course! They are easily distinguished by their visibly coconut exterior and are piped into mounds. Due to their often overpowering coconut flavour, they’re only a hit with those who are loco for coco(nut). It is believed that these originated from Italy.
