The Queen and the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, appear to share a close friendship and when the two women are out in public it is evident that they enjoy each other’s company immensely.
See an adorable moment between the two here…
But, according to royal commentator Angela Mollard, the Queen could be making more of an effort to become friends with Meghan for a very smart reason.
“I think she has probably put in the effort because she would always want Meghan to turn to her first before she would turn outwards to the media or to talking her friends,” Angela reveals on the podcast New Idea Royals.
“If she has a problem with the royal system and the ay that it works, if the Queen has established a good relationship with her, Meghan is far more likely to turn to her if she is struggling, if there are difficulties or things she’s not certain about. So, I think it’s very smart of the Queen to have drawn her close.”
Plus, Angela thinks, they would have bonded over their love of one thing in particular – dogs!
“There is that vital thing that binds them – they both love dogs,” she says.
“They have that shared genuine interest in dogs and we know in a difficult situation like that where you have tremendous years of history and hierarchy to have a connection over something as elementary and profound as animals is a very soldering thing for their relationship.”
In fact, Angela even suggests that they regularly catch up.
“I think they have more mutual interests than perhaps other royal women who have come into the royal family,” she adds.
“I think the Queen would commend her intelligence and her sense of duty… I wouldn’t be surprised if there are phone calls, who knows if the Queen texts, but I think there would be support.”
