The Queen breaks silence after horrific tragedy

The death toll is currently at 7 people.

Category 5 storm Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas on Sunday night and Monday morning, causing mass devastation in the Abacos Islands and Grand Bahamas.

Hurricane Dorian is the strongest storm recorded this year, as well as being the strongest storm ever to hit the Bahamas, with 7 people confirmed dead and 13,000 homes destroyed.

Her Majesty is the head of state in the Bahamas, and since hearing upon the vast devastation Queen Elizabeth has released a heartfelt statement.

In a message to the Governer-General of the Bahamas, the monarch spoke of her ‘shock’ and ‘devastation’.

Prince Philip and I have been shocked and saddened to learn of the devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian, and we send our sincere condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives following this terrible storm,” the message began.

The Queen’s message continued: “At this very difficult time, my thoughts and prayers are with those who have seen their homes and property destroyed, and I also send my gratitude to the emergency services and volunteers who are supporting the rescue and recovery effort.”

The Bahamas became an independent Commonwealth realm in 1973, with Queen Elizabeth II as their monarch.
