According to a newly unearthed report, Prince Harry was willing to break royal protocol and risk the good favour of his grandma, Her Majesty the Queen, all for his wife Meghan Markle.

As we all know, Queen Elizabeth takes her royal duties very seriously, and as one of England’s most beloved monarchs, she expects her children and grandchildren to follow her lead when it comes to honouring their royal responsibilities.

So when the Duke of Sussex missed his customary flight back to London following his 2016 Carribean tour in order to be with his then-girlfriend Meghan Markle, those within Buckingham Palace became worried the move would only infuriate Her Majesty.

According to Express.co.uk, Kensington Palace had stated in no uncertain terms that Prince Harry was to fly straight back to London and not detour from his schedule as he had commitments back in England.

According to a 2016 Daily Telegraph report, Prince Harry’s decision to cancel his seat on the British Airways flight home to see Meghan Markle (who was filming Suits at the time in Toronto) was a controversial move within the royal family, and one the Queen did not approve of.

“The Prince’s decision to visit Miss Markle, whom he had not seen for three weeks, defied the official Royal Household policy that members of the Royal Family should not combine personal trips with official business.”

Despite the negative press, Buckingham Palace released the following statement at the time: “Members of the Royal Family are entitled to grant-in-aid for official travel, as are their staff and, where capacity permits, other officials.

“They meet their own costs, however, for private travel. In order to avoid confusion, combining private and public engagements in the same trip is actively discouraged.”
