It is widely known that the hard-working Queen very much enjoys Her summer break at Balmoral, however, this year her Scottish holiday was delayed due to the political instability currently rocking England mid-Brexit.
As a result of Theresa May leaving office to make way for new Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the monarch found herself in the middle of a tense state of political affairs as the leader of the conservative party was calling for Her Majesty to give a vote of confidence, potentially endangering the Crown’s stance of ‘neutrality’ when it comes to the political governance of the country.
A similar battle between Crown and State arose in 1997, following Princess Diana’s sudden and tragic death.
After the Princess of Wales passed away in a car accident the Queen ‘insisted’ that the funeral be an intimate affair. However, the then Prime Minister Tony Blair, along with Prince Charles, agreed that Diana should be laid out at St. James’s Palace with a public funeral held at Westminster Abbey.
As a result, Prince Philip had to have some serious words with the politicians at Downing Street, much to the delight of Queen Elizabeth.
According to Sky’s political editor Adam Boulton in his 2008 book Tony’s Ten Years: Memoirs of the Blair Administration, tensions over Diana’s funeral arrangements got so bad between the royal family and Tony Blair, that Prince Philip finally exploded.
“The events of that week in September 1997 were very sad,” Mr Boulton writes.
“But as the spinners from Downing Street came to Buckingham Palace and started to kick around what roles Harry and William should play in the funeral, the Queen had relished the moment when Philip had bellowed over the speakerphone from Balmoral: ‘F*** off!’
“‘We are talking about two boys who have lost their mother.'”
Remind us NEVER to get on Philip’s bad side!
