The Duchess of Sussex wore jewellery which once belonged to Princess Diana on her Tuesday engagements, Kensington Palace said.
Meghan Markle wore a pair of butterfly earrings and a bracelet for the reception at Admiralty House and at Taronga Zoo, Sydney, during her royal tour with Prince Harry.
The Princess of Wales was seen wearing the jewels during a trip to Canada with Prince Charles in May 1986. The appearance occurred a year and a half after Diana gave birth to Prince Harry.
The Duchess of Sussex chose a stunning ivory dress by Australian designer Karen Gee for her first engagement on the royal couple’s 16-day tour – as all eyes were on any hint of a baby bump.
Meghan chose the fitted shift dress as she stepped out in public for the first time since the news of her pregnancy was revealed.
Within minutes of being pictured in the gown at Sydney’s Admiralty House, the designer’s website had crashed as royal fans clamoured to find out more, and perhaps even bag their own version of the stylish duchess’s outfit.
The “Blessed” dress, which sets buyers back 1,800 Australian dollars (£977), is described as a “timeless classic” which features a “simple, structured fit designed to contour the body for a sleek silhouette”.
Ms Gee, who is based in Sydney, said it was a “wonderful surprise” to see Meghan in one of her designs – although had been aware it could happen after submitting several pieces for consideration.
At an afternoon reception hosted by the Governor General and Lady Cosgrove at Admiralty House on Oct 16, the Prince Harry started a speech with “G’day your Excellency, ladies and gentlemen.
“It is obviously great to be back in Australia and even more so because this is my wife’s first visit here, so I’m very excited to show her this wonderful country of yours.
“Australia is of course home to some of the world’s best sporting talent, but what you are about to see at these Invictus Games will, quite literally, astound you.
“A demonstration of the power of the human spirit, the power of sport to change lives and the power of feeling part of all of this from the stands.
“There really is something for everyone.
“Thank you Your Excellency and Lady Cosgrove for giving us your magnificent home for the week. We are inviting all of our mates in Sydney…
“Finally, we are both absolutely delighted to be here. We are really impressed to see you serving beer and tea at an afternoon reception in true Aussie style.
“We couldn’t think of a better place to announce the upcoming baby.”
