The couple visited South Yorkshite, where they attended a project run by the homeless charity Centrepoint, a cause the prince was introduced to by his late mother, Princess Diana.

At the charity’s the Quarry View hostel in Barnsley – where 17 young people stay – William and Kate helped prepare lunch.

The prince stirred Omero’s Red Pepper and Chorizo soup as his wife sliced some breading, joking: “Don’t look at how evenly I cut it.”

William then sat down with two young people who’ve been helped by Centrepoint and two staffers for a bite to eat.

“I’m doing my balancing the soup act,: the prince said as he shakily carried a tray of soup.

“Sorry to keep you waiting for your lunch — we’ve been talking too much as usual.”

Kate then apologised for her slicing skills, telling: “I think I cut some rather big slices.”

“Don’t be put off by the size of Catherine’s bread. They’re enough to wedge the door,” her husband joked.
