Wrestling legend Ric Flair opened up about his narrow escape from death in a recent interview with PEOPLE.
The 16-time World Champion was admitted to hospital last month with stomach pains.
Hours later he was in the beginning stages of kidney failure and dangerously close to heart failure – caused by decades of alcohol abuse.
‘I crashed in an airplane and broke my back, I’ve been hit by lightning,’ he said. ‘But this is totally different. Anything I’ve been through before is nothing like this.’
The 68-year-old was placed in a medically induced coma as doctors worked furiously to save his life.
They removed part of his bowel and inserted a pacemaker but the situation was so dire, his family were told he only had a 20 percent chance of surviving.
Flair says years of drinking caused his health issues.
‘I’ve never taken a pain pill in my life. I’d just take a shower, flip my hair back and go to the best bar in town,’ he said.
‘I’ll never drink again. I never want to go through this again.’
