Lisa McCune is impressing fans and judges alike with her current turn on Dancing with the Stars, but appearing on reality TV was not something the actress ever saw herself doing.

New Idea has been told that Channel Seven was able to convince Lisa, 53, to do the show as part of a wider working relationship that could potentially result in a Blue Heelers reboot!

Earlier this year, renowned screenwriter Greg Haddrick joined Lisa’s newly formed production company, Broadstory, that she co-founded with director Fiona Banks.

“Fiona and I have worked together for many years, back to when I performed in Blue Heelers,” Lisa recently explained.

“It was during a production we did in the pandemic, when we started talking about storytelling and about the kind of shows [we were interested in] when we decided to get together.”

Establishing the company is an interesting move for Lisa, who has spent the best part of 30 years in front of the cameras, including playing Senior Constable Maggie Doyle on Blue Heelers from the series’ launch in 1994 to 2000.

But our source says that after wowing Channel Seven on DWTS, the network is keen to engage Lisa, and Broadstory, for more work.

The source adds a Blue Heelers reboot would be the perfect project as it would certainly be “a guaranteed hit”. Lisa has already signalled her intentions to create creating Australian dramas through Broadstory.

“We need to keep Australian stories intact; we can’t just let audiences slip away and watch [only] American shows,” she told media earlier this year. “I hope this is the beginning of something wonderful.”

While new, locally made dramas have struggled to win over audiences in recent years, Aussies have gravitated to adaptations of old favourites, such as Foxtel’s Wentworth, which told a new story based on Prisoner.

“There’s a real appetite for reboots,” adds our insider. During Blue Heelers’ 13-season run on Channel Seven, it won a total of 25 TV Week Logie Awards, including five Gold – four for Lisa and one for John Wood.

“It makes sense to have Lisa involved in bringing back Heelers,” adds our insider.

“With a good script and cast, and someone who knows the core of the show as well as Lisa does, they can’t go wrong.”
