She’s known as a ‘tyrant’ within the royal family, firing off cruel taunts and taking on anyone who dares stand in her way. But now it seems Camilla has a new target – our very own Princess Mary.
Camilla – who’s made Duchess Kate’s life hell – has made her feelings about the Danish royal very clear after a shock attack.
The tension was on show during a palace function, when Camilla snapped at Mary, creating a crisis in royal circles over her appalling behaviour.
‘Prince Charles couldn’t take his eyes off Mary, and Camilla was livid,’ reveals a royal insider.
‘She was incredibly rude to Mary when they started talking, and Camilla was very confrontational, snapping at her and putting her down in front of everyone – it was a betrayal she never saw coming. It was very unbecoming behaviour from Camilla – Charles was incredibly embarrassed.’
According to royal insiders, Charles and Mary have a close and supportive friendship.
‘Mary and Charles have a lot in common – they’re both very committed to charity and they’re both next in line to the throne, and speak often of that immense responsibility,’ a well-placed aide tells New Idea.
‘There’s a lot of mutual respect – Charles is very close to Prince Frederik as well.
‘But at the end of the day, Mary is everything that Camilla isn’t – she’s young, beautiful, incredibly popular and has married her Prince Charming. Camilla, on the other hand, is Britain’s least favourite royal, with polls constantly indicating no-one wants her to become Queen. She has been sidelined by Charles for many years – thanks to his marriage to Princess Diana – and was forced to have an affair behind palace doors and be his “dirty little secret”.
‘The fact that Mary reminds her of Diana doesn’t help things. Just like Diana, Mary is the People’s Princess and it drives Camilla crazy with envy.’
It’s believed Camilla is also jealous that Mary, 45, and Fred, 48, are acting King and Queen of Denmark for several weeks while Queen Margrethe is on leave.
‘Queen Elizabeth would never do anything like that and Camilla knows it,’ says the insider.
‘It annoys Camilla that Margrethe has faith in her son and Mary to look after the throne while she is away, but even when the Queen was sick for over a month at Christmas, she refused to step away from duty. If anything, she chose to offload her commitments to William and Kate over Charles and Camilla, which was a kick in the teeth.
‘Camilla is very competitive over who will be Queen out of her and Mary. She constantly gets angry about how “unfair it is” to Charles, but he won’t have a bad word said of Mary and shuts down the conversation quickly – which riles Camilla up even more.’
