For the past two years, the astrophysicist has been growing out his hair for the Leukaemia foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave.

Now, the reality star shaved it all off with the help of Today Extra’s Sylvia Jeffreys and David Campbell.

Appearing on Today, Matt donned a World’s Greatest Shave cape as he prepared for his locks to shaved off his head.

When asked by David why the Leukaemia foundation is a cause close to his heart, Matt revealed he has had some loved ones “affected by blood cancers”.

“I don’t think you need to have someone in your life to want to contribute and try to do something positive by raising funds through the World’s Greatest Shave that go directly to funding critical medical research for treatments and diagnoses,” the scientist said.

Explaining his goal is to raise $30,000, Matt urged viewers to donate via the World’s Greatest Shave website.

“I’m delighted to directly help Australians impacted by blood cancer and to stand in solidarity with people battling the disease, by taking part in World’s Greatest Shave and raising vital funds for medical research,” Matt said in a statement via the Leukaemia Foundation.

“Particularly for children going through blood cancer, it is great for them to see someone looking like them with a shaved head. It can help them feel more relatable.

“It’s heartbreaking that there are 110,000 people currently living with blood cancer in Australia, so it’s wonderful to be able to contribute in this way.”

Matt ended his statement by saying he’d “highly encourage people to get involved” in the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave.

Today, 50 Australians will be newly diagnosed with blood cancer such as leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma, and by 2035, that number is expected to double to 100 people each day, according to the Leukaemia Foundation.

Blood cancer can develop in anyone and doesn’t discriminate when it comes to age. Currently, there are no screening programs available and there is no way to prevent this type of cancer through lifestyle change.

Funds raised from the World’s Greatest Shave will provide vital support and care for the growing number of Australians impacted by the disease.
